Moira Cameron – London, United Kingdom

Moira Cameron

Moira Cameron was announced as the first female Yeoman Warder at the Tower of London amid huge international media interest in January 2007.  She joined the Body of Yeoman Warders at the Tower in summer 2007 and took on the title of Yeoman Warder Cameron. Cameron overcame centuries of inequality in the United Kingdom and remains the only woman to hold this honored position in the Tower’s 900 year history.

A native of Argyll, Scotland, Moira Cameron joined the Army in June 1985 at the age of 20 and saw service in England, Northern Ireland and Cyprus.  She joined the Women’s Royal Army Corps (WRAC) and trained as a Data Telegraphist with the Royal Signals.

In 1988 she transferred and trained as a Military Accountant with the Royal Army Pay Corps (RAPC).  In 1992 upon disbandment of the WRAC & RAPC she was transferred to the Adjutant Generals Corp (Staff & Personnel Support) Branch where she worked her way through the ranks to Warrant Officer Class 2., which is the second highest non-commissioned rank in the Army.  She was awarded the Long Service and Good Conduct (LS&GC) medal in 1990.

Moira Cameron completed her 22 years of service in the Armed Forces in June 2007.

At 42, Cameron is “immensely proud” to have secured the title Yeoman Warder.  She was chosen for the position over five other male candidates.  Her job involves giving guided tours and guarding the Crown Jewels.

Her hobbies include golf, tennis, reading, walking, cycling and computing.
